Making the step across the pond
This year, Onza Tires was at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California as an exhibitor for the first time: René Wildhaber was ripping the local trails, and the brand's new tires were on display at the booth and on a selection of sample bikes.
Last year, Onza Tires' presence at the Sea Otter Classic was still low-profile: Tires of the brand were mounted on new bicycles from Commencal and BMC Racing, so journalists from various countries got to ride them. For 2012, Onza Tires decided to take the next step: Michel Manz, David Pergant and Urs Odermatt made the trip to California with a selection of sample tires, a tent for the exhibition and a couple of banners added to their luggage. The trio visited the American headquarters of a couple of bicycle brands and then took position at the Laguna Seca racetrack in Monterey.
Like at last year's Sea Otter Classic, some of Onza Tires' products were mounted on much-discussed bicycles that were being presented to the media. This time it was the Canis 29x2.25 on BMC's new "Team Elite TE 01 29" carbon hardtail. With so much attention the photos of Onza Tires' Canis 29x2.25 are showing up on well-frequented websites such as bikeradar.com or pinkbike.com. By presenting the all-new skinwall versions with their distinctive old-school look, Onza Tires caused quite a stir at the Sea Otter Classic.
"We have no distribution partner in North America yet, but thanks to our cooperation with brands such as BMC and Commencal our products can be found not only at our booth but also on the trails surrounding the exhibition site", Apex Sports LLC's CEO Michel Manz commented on Onza Tires' showing in California. "The Sea Otter Classic does not only serve to be seen, it's also an excellent event for networking and trend scouting. And on top of that, we have been visiting the American headquarters of brands such as Giant, Felt, Intense, Santa Cruz, Ibis, Haro and Turner."
Onza Tires' team rider René Wildhaber was also at the festival as one of our brand ambassadors. Before heading for Monterey, he had been attending the Santa Cruz Bike Festival where he participated in the "Super Enduro" race, competing with a couple of strong locals. Then he went to the "Sea Otter Classic" for the premiere of Anthill's new movie production "Strength in Numbers".
